Demolition has begun at AOL's former headquarters in Sterling. The site is being cleared for a new data center and power substation.

STERLING, VA — AOL's former headquarters is being demolished in Loudoun County. The site is being cleared for a new PowerHouse Data Center campus, a PowerHouse spokesperson told Patch.

AOL operated their headquarters in Loudoun County from 1996 through 2007, when it moved its base to New York City.

The demolition will be complete in early 2024, PowerHouse officials estimated. Construction crews will then start work on three new buildings and a power substation. The construction project will be completed in mid-2026, according to a news release.

PowerHouse has not said what company could occupy the new data center.

Luke Kipfer is the vice president of data center development and construction at American Real Estate Partners, which owns PowerHouse.

"It's exciting to see this underutilized site with such a historical connection to the early internet evolve to be part of the future internet," Kipfer said in a news release. "Repurposing and transforming this site to operate at its highest and best use aligns with our sustainability commitment and positively affects how we all live, work, and play."

To prepare for the demolition, construction crews pulled tons of materials from the site. Furnitures and office supplies that once belonged to a $200 billion company were donated. Ceiling tiles, floors, and walls were stripped for parts that could be recycled.

Kitchen supplies from the site's cafeteria were donated to the Dulles South Soup Kitchen, a spokesperson said.

Demolition started with the parking garages. Three office buildings, a pedestrian bridge, and a mail hub were next in line for destruction.

AOL moved its headquarters to Loudoun County in 1996 after running out of space in its initial Vienna location. After AOL moved out, the site also hosted Yahoo! and Verizon.

Several neighbors told DC News Now that they awoke to the sound of instructions blaring over a loudspeaker, instructing the people inside the home to come outside. They said that an armored tank and other vehicles surrounded the home, pointing laser scopes.

One woman recorded the exchange, and shared video with DC News Now.

“This is the FBI, we have a government search warrant for the residence. Come outside with your hands up, with nothing in your hands. We don’t want to see anyone get hurt. Come out the front door with your hands up,” the commands boomed over a speaker.

A spokeswoman for the FBI Baltimore field office said that no one was taken into custody when the house was searched. She said that the case is sealed, and no further information would be shared. She said there is no known threat to the community.

“The FBI does not disclose specific law enforcement tactics, techniques, or procedures; however, the safety of all the affected individuals is the priority of the FBI in every operation. Additionally, the FBI makes every effort to minimize any negative impact the court authorized search might have in the community,” she stated in an email to DC News Now.

Neighbors said that they saw Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office deputies assisting in loading items from the home. LCSO spokeswoman Michelle Bowman said the investigation is ongoing and she could not provide details.

DC News Now reached out to the man who lives in the home, who declined to comment.

One neighbor, who asked to remain anonymous until he knows what the FBI is investigating, said that the man who lives in the home that was searched is known to be a “kind” and “helpful” neighbor to the community.

“A couple of times he has leaned my yard and he has also given me some advice about certain things in the house. Like how I can get my internet fast,” he said.

The neighbor said the early morning wake up was startling.

“It was just lights flashing and an announcement being made that all the occupants should come out and then all those officials with their big guns storming into the house, it was like a movie scenario,” he said. “I have never seen anything like this in real life, let alone in my neighborhood. The only time I’ve seen this stuff is in the movies.”

LOUDOUN COUNTY, VA — Ashburn's Waxpool Elementary School is the best elementary school in Virginia, according to a Niche ranking.

The ranking, which was released this week, judges schools across the commonwealth on academics, teachers, culture and diversity, and surveys from students and parents. The list also accounts for the school district's Niche grade.

Waxpool Elementary School in Ashburn ranked first among the 1,124 elementary schools included in the list.

The school opened in 2019 with principal Michael Pellegrino, who is still with the school.

"Incredible admin and school culture. Truly thinking about students beyond just the classroom which has been profound for our two children," one parent reviewer wrote on Niche's website. "Beautiful facility too! Happy to be a Piranha!"

Another Loudoun County elementary school, Goshen Post Elementary School, ranked third in the statewide ranking. In total, 12 other Loudoun County elementary schools ranked in the top 100.

The Niche rankings differ from others that rely almost exclusively on test scores and academic performance in that it also includes input from students, alumni and parents, as well as quantitative data from sources such as the U.S. Department of Education to evaluate teachers, resources and facilities.

Workers at two Chicago stores, both of which unionized previously, claimed that the company does not provide workers with enough to do their jobs effectively, the Chicago Tribune reported on Wednesday.

The strike comes on Red Cup Day, when the company hands out tens of thousands of free reusable cups, one of its busiest customer traffic days of the year, the union said. As part of the strike, workers will demand Starbucks turn off mobile ordering on future promotion days, which company executives are scheduling with increasing frequency.

"Starbucks Workers United is here to work with the company and as true partners. Me and my fellow partners have dealt with bullying and harassment that Starbucks continues, but thanks to us unionizing we are able to voice our opinions and fight back. Starbucks has missions and values that they don’t stand by but as a union, we’re able to hold Starbucks to those values," said Angel Hall, a Chicago-based partner organizer of the strike. "That's why we're going on a ULP strike this Red Cup Day."

According to a news release, the Red Cup Rebellion is expected to draw in students and customers, who are increasingly calling on the company to live up to its progressive values and listen to workers who are demanding the company respect their right to a union and bargain a fair contract.

Earlier this week, students at UCLA introduced a resolution at the student council calling on the administration to kick Starbucks off of campus as a consequence of its illegal union busting, which has resulted in administrative law judges finding the company has broken the law more than 270 times, union officials said in the news release.
