During a meeting on Tuesday (Oct. 24), the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors approved a plan from developer Eastgate JV LLC to allow residential development on the 11.8-acre property at the corner of Little River Turnpike and John Marr Drive.
The new building will be six stories tall and include 280 multifamily units, along with 11,220 square feet of commercial retail on the ground floor. The application also proposed adding 23,858 square feet of new, on-site urban park spaces.
There were no public comments on the plan, but Scott Adams, a lawyer representing the project developer, told the Board of Supervisors they think the development will be an asset to the community.
“It’s also something where we think it’s going to spur additional revitalization in the area,” he said.
The construction will take over the space currently occupied by The Block, a popular food hall. Adams said at an Oct. 11 planning commission public hearing that there are plans to retain The Block in some form.
The Board of Supervisors also approved the developer’s request to reduce parking requirements to 1.34 spaces per apartment unit — a 16% reduction from the county’s current requirement of 1.6 spaces per unit.
Adams said the redevelopment has a focus on creating “a safe and inviting pedestrian environment.”
“So we’ve removed a turn lane on John Marr Drive [and] provided wildlife landscape amenity panels on both sides of the 10-foot mixed-use trail,” he said.
A nearby bus stop on John Marr Drive will also be upgraded with a bus shelter and ADA-accessible pad.
Anchored until 2018 by K-Mart, which got replaced by K Market International, the Eastgate Shopping Center is home to several restaurants and grocery stores. Although the planning commission recommended the board approve the plan earlier this month, some members warned against the gentrification of the area’s retail and restaurants.
Mason District Supervisor Penny Gross said she was happy to see the plans becoming a reality.
“The original idea was a mixed-use town center in phases and now, 15 years later, the first phase is coming to fruition,” Gross said.

Instead of hearing meats sizzling as you walk through the door, you’ll get the smoky smell of chicken and ribs at this Korean barbecue joint.
To most American diners, “Korean barbecue” is synonymous with meats sizzling on a tabletop grill. But in Korea, says Chanmin Song, the definition of barbecue is rapidly expanding. Song is the manager at O’my ChiQ & Bar in Annandale, the first Northern Virginia restaurant to follow the Korean trend of wood-fired chicken and ribs.
When diners enter O’my ChiQ (pronounced “chee-cue”), they’re greeted by a wall-size rotisserie. “We bring the machine and everything from Korea,” says Song. “We wanted to make a Korean type of chicken.” Whole chickens and racks of ribs wrapped into rosettes around the rotisserie’s arms turn slowly, imbued with the taste of wood over the course of several hours.
The best way to take advantage is to order a bit of both. The signature spicy back ribs aren’t as piquant as they sound, but they are no less enticing despite their lack of heat. The delicately smoky pork adheres to the bone precisely until a diner’s teeth rip it with a touch of force.
The chicken? It’s available in a variety of preparations, including buried in creamy corn cheese. But we like it plain and served with a sampling of sauces. The sweetness of teriyaki enhances the kiss of fire, as does a creamy, spicy dip. A side of pickled radishes refreshes the palate between bites.
Although the concept is purely Korean, Song says that the diners who come to the expansive, freestanding restaurant, decorated with a tree theme, represent “a little bit of everybody.” Still, the team is devoted to serving products from Korea. That includes piles of crispy French fries dusted in seasonings from the homeland: everything from bulgogi to spicy cheese, and all just a little bit sweet. Diners can pair them with a beer-soju tower.
It’s perfectly reasonable to head to Annandale for galbi or bulgogi. But when chicken and pork are on the menu, O’my ChiQ is a gateway to a new variety of meaty Korean meal.

Paolo Dungca has long been pushing the boundaries of Filipino cuisine at places like the late Bad Saint and Wharf restaurant Kaliwa—and recently at his own string of pop-ups and restaurants, including the popular Pogiboy near Dupont Circle. Now, the rising star chef has expanded to Annandale with a new fast-casual concept: Sari Filipino Kusina, an all-day comfort food spot that opened over the weekend.
Dungca teamed up with Juan and Jeremy Canlas, the father/son owners of Supreme Barbeque, for the restaurant, which takes over the Braddock Road location of their local ‘cue chain. Dungca ran a Filipino barbecue pop-up there over the summer. The homestyle menu boasts a variety of grilled, barbecued, and smoked meats, including street-style skewers, rice bowls topped with smoked tocino ribs or lemongrass chicken, and family-style platters such as Tito Jan’s smoked brisket, sold by the half or full pound. For sides, Dungca dishes up a smoky mac n’ cheese and atchara pickles. Diners will also find homestyle plates like lumpia (spring rolls), pancit noodles, crispy pork sisig hash, or chicken adobo.
“We wanted to do something simple but good, nothing too cheffy,” says Dungca.
The name Sari nods to sarimanok, a mythical Filipino bird that symbolizes good fortune, and also to sari-sari convince stores. To that end, expats and home cooks can shop from a small grocery stocked with pantry ingredients, snacks, and other staples.
Next up for Dungca and the Canlas family: a brick-and-mortar location on H Street, Northeast for Hiraya—a finer dining Filipino concept that Dungca created and recently tested out at the Block in DC. The permanent spot takes over a two-story building (1248-1250 H Street, NE) and will house dual concepts: an all-day Filipino diner below a more polished restaurant for dinner. Expect an a la carte menu to start with creative bites like cassava cake with crab fat, lardo, and smoked trout roe.
“I think people are really interested in the growth of Filipino food, and the evolution of our heritage throughout the years,” says Dungca. “It’s nice to continue to share our story.”

If you've lived in Annandale for more than a couple of years, you may have learned how to make pizza when you were a kid from a man named Mike Magill. The long-time restaurateur has been an Annandale resident since the 1980s and is the owner of Magill's Famous Pizza and Buffet located at 7201 Little River Turnpike. The restaurant is known for it's community environment and it's large quality buffets, but the man behind the restaurant is known in the community for much more.
A graduate of George Mason University in Fairfax, Magill ran a Shakey's Pizza franchise for several years before starting his own business. In 1988, he dropped the Shakey's Pizza name and the royalties that came with it and renamed his restaurant to the name many Annandale residents are familiar with: Magill's Famous Pizza and Buffet. "People who had been customers for at least five years wondered how I came up with a name like 'Magill's'; They didn't know it was my last name," Magill explained.
An ardent believer in giving back to the local community, Magill and his restaurant participate in a number of activities in Annandale and around the Mason District. He is a member of the Annandale Chamber of Commerce and a regular supporter of the annual fall festival and parade. Magill recently won recognition as the Mason District' s 2010 Lord Fairfax. The award is given to members of each district in Fairfax County who have demonstrated outstanding volunteer service in their community. Members of the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors select two members to nominate each year.
He is also committed to working with youth and children with special needs. With his help, children from the neighborhood have been able to participate in little league games and compete in the Special Olympics. Magill said he makes time to connect with youth and others because "kids want to know things" and "no person is too big to not take the time to reach out to the youth."
Magill's Famous Pizza and Buffet in Annandale has been around for over 25 years. The restaurant caters to large groups including people traveling cross-country by coach buses, a market Magill says is his "niche" outside of the local businesses and community events he caters to. "Since Washington, D.C. is a big travel destination for students and tour groups, [they need a place that's] student and group friendly. We have what they need," said Magill.

Dobson Bowdon of Madison, Mississippi, President of Bowdon Coaches, LLC –TREK Travel Programs, has been bringing students to Magill's for almost 15 years. He said he "couldn't work with nicer people who truly care about providing our groups a great experience and good food too."
The restaurant serves special and varying buffets on different days of the week. Monday through Thursday is a regular buffet of fried chicken, pizza, spaghetti and meatballs. On Fridays, there is a seafood buffet and on Saturdays and Sundays, there are barbeque ribs from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. and a number of other dishes. At the back of the restaurant, there are a variety of arcade games and other electronic games that patrons can play.
